As a singer or voice over artiste, your vocal cords are your instruments, as such they should be your top priority.

Vocal Chords are 2 bands of smooth muscle tissues found in the larynx also known as the voice box. When you speak or sing, these two chords pull tighter to produce higher notes, and stay lose for lower notes.

Having great, healthy vocal chords gives your voice full range and enables you produce clear, tuneful and pure sounds/messages.

Here are a few ways to keep your vocal chords in good shape.

  • Avoid Cold Drinks

Stay off cold drinks especially before your recordings as they do you more harm than good. Cold water can make your vocal chords tense up and contract , and we all know we’d rather them loose for a more pure and clear sound. Rather take warm drinks as they help hydrate your chords.

  • Exercise

No, I am not talking about squats or lifting weights (even though they are Great), as a voice over artiste you should warm up your facial muscles and your voice.

Just before your recording , loosen your lips and jaw muscles by blowing through your lips, also try sticking out your tongue as far as it will go, do some gentle lip rolls… this helps you loosen up.

Also  Practice some humming, all of these helps prepare your chords for a great voicing experience.

  • Rest

Generally, a tired body is less productive. Ensure you have enough rest.

Take time to rest your voice especially if you have been using your voice a lot. Rest by taking some time off talking, singing and whispering for a couple of minutes. This helps your vocal chords recuperate and heal.

Remember, the state of your vocal health can make or break your voice recording.
